  • Prepare a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper in which you explore development during infancy and early childhood.  Include the following:

 

  • Explain how families affect the development of infants and young children.
  • Evaluate different parenting styles and their influence on development during infancy and early childhood.  Include which parenting style you feel is most effective and why.
  • Discuss early childhood education and its influence on cognitive development.

 

  • Include at least two references.
  • Format your paper to APA standards.

 

Week 3:

 

Learning Team Assignment (Due Day 7-Monday): Middle Childhood and Adolescence Development Paper

 

  • Prepare a 1,500- to 1,700-word paper in which you address adolescence and how this stage affects development.  Include where appropriate the positive and/or negative consequences of developmental choices during this time period.
  • Address the following items:

 

  • Describe changes in peer relationships in middle childhood and adolescence.
  • Examine aspects of adolescent egocentrism.
  • Analyze pressures often faced in adolescence, such as peer pressure, substance use and abuse, dating, sexuality, and changes within family relationships.

Week 5:

 

Individual Assignment (Due Day 7–Monday): Late Adulthood and End of Life Paper

 

  • Prepare a 1,200- to 1,400-word paper in which you analyze late adulthood and the death of an individual as a culmination of the life span developmental process.  Be sure to address the following items in your paper.

 

  • Evaluate how individuals can promote health and wellness into late adulthood and mitigate the negative effects of aging.
  • Analyze ageism and stereotypes associated with late adulthood.
  • Explore different views of death and dying at different points in human development.
  • Examine various culture attitudes towards death and dying.

 

  • Include at least three references.
  • Format your paper to APA standards.

Week 1:

 

  • How do nature and nurture influence development?  Do you feel one is more dominant than the other?  Why?
  • What are two main psychoanalytic theories?  What contributions have these theories made to the study of life span development?  What are criticisms of psychoanalytic theories?

 

Week 2:

 

  • What aspects of parenting are linked with the development of young children?  What style of parenting did your parents use in rearing you?  What affect do you think that their parenting styles had on your development?
  • What are the similarities and differences between Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories of cognitive development?  Which one do you believe is more accurate?  Explain why.

 

Week 3:

 

  • What characteristics are associated with adolescent development?  How have adolescents changed over the last 30 years?  How have they remained the same?
  • How are adolescent problems interrelated?  What are some components of successful prevention and intervention programs with adolescents?

 

Week 4:

 

  • Read Issue 14, Is There Such a Thing as “Emerging Adulthood”?, in the Taking Sides text.  What does the term ‘emerging adulthood’ refer to?  Do you support the concept of ‘emerging adulthood’ and should it be considered a developmental stage?  Explain.
  • Are there more pressures on marriage today than in the past?  Explain why or why not.

 

Week 5:

 

  • What changes in your current lifestyle might help you age more successfully when you become an older adult?
  • Do you plan to retire or continue working as an older adult?  Explain why.
